Aboriginal Academy

The Academy starts 2021

A high-performance football-based program for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander school students.

In partnership with the Tjindu Foundation, AFL Max is proud to launch the Tjindu AFL Max Academy.

The Academy invites a squad of 60 students (30 males and 30 females) to join the program, where they attend a once-a-week education and high-performance training day at AFL Max, that is fully funded by the Tjindu Foundation. Students will undertake VET Qualifications in Sport Coaching with SEDA Group (SEDA) RTO 22503 and will have the opportunity to gain employment through AFL Max and Sports Education Development Australia Pty Ltd.

The fully funded Academy comprises of weekly sessions that cover a range of theoretical and practical tasks related to the qualification and will be delivered and assessed by SEDA with expert lecturers from Tjindu, AFL Max and the wider football community, all in the start-of-the-art facility at AFL Max.

The Academy will commence in Week 2 of Term 1 of the 2021 school year with students required to attend at AFL Max 1 day per week for 35 weeks.

Academy Inclusions

In addition to assisting and driving retention and success rates of the Indigenous students, the program will also enable students to receive:

  • SIS20319 Certificate II in Sports Coaching (Yr 11)
  • SIS30519 Certificate III in Sports Coaching (Yr 12)
  • Provide considerable SACE Credits (see below)
  • A choice of an Aboriginal studies elective
  • Potential travel opportunities as a cohort, subject to travel restrictions
  • A day a week at AFL Max's high performance facility
  • Fully funded by the Tjindu Foundation

Academy Outcomes

The Academy aims to provide the following outcomes and opportunities for the cohort:

  • Improvements in overall health and fitness (strength and conditioning)
  • Connections with their Aboriginal culture
  • Greater understanding of the recovery process
  • Strength in leadership and confidence
  • Insights into life as a professional athlete
  • Game plan, reviews and preparation
  • Team and individual skill development

The Academy will also provide students with:

  • Links to employers and employment vacancies for post year 12 with a focus on Apprenticeships and Traineeships
  • Career advice workshops, resume' preparation and employability skills via SEDA’s MyPLAN
  • Mentoring support for the first twelve months transition to employment

Student Eligibility

There are a number of ‘Key Performance Indicators’ which students will be required to achieve to qualify for the Academy.

These are:

  • In the 2021 school year, be 16 years of age or older, and enrolled to undertake Year 11 or 12 studies
  • Maintain a minimum 80% attendance rate across all subjects throughout the 2021 school year
  • Achieve academic success in all subjects (C grade or better)
  • Adhere at all times to the school's behaviour management code
